Kentucky Derby tickets

Founded in 1875 the Kentucky Derby is one of the most famous thoroughbred horse races in the world. A ‘full field’ at the Kentucky Derby consists of 20 horses and their riders and is held on the very first Saturday of May every year in Louisville, Kentucky. The official flower of the race is the rose and is the origin of the oft used moniker for the race, the ‘Run of the Roses’. It’s also been lovingly called ‘the most exciting 2 minutes in sports’ because of the huge purse that it pays to the winning horse and its owner.

Indeed winning the Kentucky Derby is considered a true honor for horse and rider and the payoff in notoriety and stud fees down the road for a winning horse can be enormous. Payouts to patrons who bet on the race can also be big and, in 2008, a $2.00 bet on Mine That Bird paid $100.00! Of course this doesn’t happen very often but it’s the fact that it is possible that make the Kentucky Derby so popular and exciting. It is one of the most watched sports events of the year every year and probably one of the Top 3 horse races in the world.

Adding to its allure is the fact that the Kentucky Derby is part of the ‘Triple Crown’ of horse racing and, along with the Preakness Stakes in Maryland and New York’s Belmont Stakes, is a triple feat that few horses have ever accomplished. Indeed in the entire time that the race has been run there have only been 11 horses that have accomplished it, making the Triple Crown one of the most elusive achievements in sports. Seattle Slew is one of the most famous horses to ever win the Triple Crown for example and that was many years ago.

Of course 2 minutes does not a weekend sporting event make and much of the excitement surrounding the Kentucky Derby is from the weekend-long party thrown by the rich and somewhat famous. Many traditions are followed faithfully every year during the weekend of the Kentucky Derby and some of them were started by the ancestors of the very people who now have horses in the race. From charity events to the famous mint julep drink that is heavily imbibed and the traditional songs that are played as the horses roll out the pomp and circumstance is thick (and that’s the way they like it).

One of the most famous and most popular of pastimes during Kentucky Derby weekend is for the ladies who go to the event to wear large, wide brimmed and fancy hats. It started in the 19th century, back when it was considered unladylike to go outside without a hat, and has morphed into a regal parade of exotic hats every year with all of the ladies trying to outdo each other.

It’s just another thing to do when you go to one of the most famous horse races in the world, the Kentucky Derby. It certainly is one of the most exciting, and fun to watch, 2 minutes in sports.
