Houston Rodeo Trail Rides
When a person thinks about the ‘old west’ one of the first images that always comes to mind is that of a wagon train hitting the dusty trail. During the days of pioneers and cattle ranching the wagons that were used left trails behind that were used over and over again, taking their cattle, their wares and their hopes and dreams to distant locales.
Those days are long gone of course but today they are being relived with the help of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This February, as they have done for the last 60 years, people from all over Texas and the west will head out on the open trail and head to Houston. In fact there are expected to be 3000 people involved in the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Trail Ride this year, up significantly from the 4 men that made the first journey back in 1952 from Brenham, Texas.
The Trail Ride is a signature event of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo an attracts an immense amount of publicity to the show and to the Western lifestyle. The men and women that take part in the Trail Ride do their very best to recreate what is was like to live in the West way back when and the attention to detail is amazing.
All the riders and their wagons are scheduled to arrive in Houston for the Show on Friday, February 24th this year. The Show hosts them up until the Rodeo Parade begins on Saturday. There are a total of 12 trails that will be used this year and more than 2000 miles will be traveled by all of the participants. Some of the riders will start as early as the beginning of February to make their way to the Show and indeed they come from as far away as Logansport, LA.
Participants get prizes for their effort and are judged on their appearance and their use of traditional western wear and gear. It’s a lot of fun and a great sight to see so, if you’re planning on taking in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo this year, make sure not to miss the tremendous Trail Ride that brings the Old West back to life.
